Movie Synopsis:

When a 12-year-old from Detroit moves to China with his mother and incurs the wrath of the class bully at his new school, he makes an unlikely ally in the form of his aging maintenance man, a kung fu master who teaches him the secrets to self-defense. Upon arriving at his new school, Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) develops a powerful crush on pretty classmate Mei Ying. The feeling is mutual, although the cultural divide between Dre and Mei Ying makes a friendship unlikely, and romance impossible. When cruel classmate and kung fu prodigy Cheng learns of Dre's feelings for Mei Ying, he harasses and humiliates the young outsider in front of the entire school. With no one to turn to for help, Dre confides his fears in kindly maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), a kung fu master who knows that serenity and maturity -- not punches and power -- are the true keys to mastering the martial arts. As Dre prepares to face down his intimidating tormentor, he begins to realize that the real fight is just beginning. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I previewed this movie for my 6 1/2 year old son who is aching to see it. My conclusion: great movie but WAAAY too violent for elementary school children, so I will not take my son. I recommend parents put it on their list of things for the kids to watch when older, because it really does have a wonderful message about perseverence and judgement of others. I feel that young children can easily miss out on those positive messages when having to deal with all the violence. An older child who can handle the scenes will be able to see through to the core of the message and actually benefit from the movie.

Claire gave it an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10!

My kids thought that the movie was solid. They were interested all the way through. No lulls.

Great movie night for my 10-year-old and me!

Saw this with my 10-year-old. Great movie! Stayed true to the original with some good unique differences. Good messages, good acting and humor. Definitely more tame than the original with only a couple mild words and a brief innocent kissing scene (think Disney princess movies). Anyway, we loved this movie!

Great Movie!

Yes, it has some language that kids shouldn't use, but it's over quick and that's it. I was very skeptical about this remake, as I loved the original when I was growing up. My 3 boys have seen the original, and were very excited to see the changes. I thought the studio did an excellent job in the remake. I already use the 'hang up your jacket' line anytime the boys leave something lying around. This is one of the first 'kid' films that I have actually said I would pay movie theater prices to see again. It was well done, and the scenery and setting were amazing! Great family movie.

Great movie, exciting plot, good themes!

There is lots of violence in this movie, but it's nothing bloody or gory, and it's to be expected in a movie about martial arts. The character, Dre, does use a few bad words, but nothing too foul. This movie sends the message that hard work and perseverance is the way to learn skills and reach goals. It also shows the value of respect for others, including parents. Mr. Han is a great role model of kindness, friendship, and peacefulness.

Honor, bravery, discipline and respect in a kids movie..run to see this!

I really liked this remake of the 1980's classic Karate Kid. They stuck to the spirit of that movie and improved it. I had recently tried to show my boys the original and was disappointed that it seemed to have lost a lot of it's impact in the years since I was a kid. My kid's really had no interest in it. I was really hoping they had forgot it (they had) as we went to see this version. They loved it! I would only add that it seemed a little long for my younger son, but my 13 year old was fully into it. The overall messages of honor, bravery and hard work through discipline and respect are rare in any movie these days.

Did not like it. There was so much violence, a romance was highlighted between two 11 year olds, and the acting was not good. Very disappointing.

Older tweens can go but movie isn't really good

This movie is rather brutal in terms of the fighting. The bullies do not bring forth a good message until the end. Jackie Chan's character brings forth many positive messages though. Some characters are good role models, others aren't. This isn't exactly a very good movie.

All about empowerment

This is an excellent movie. My son and I both loved it. Yes, it is violent. And in general I would normally shy away from the idea that violence is the answer to the problem. But, unfortunately, sometimes in life you need to learn how to stand up and assert yourself. This movie is all about learning how to stand on your own two feet and believing in yourself. Jaden Smith is a young star - he excellently portrayed the helplessness of a situation where adults could do / would do nothing to really help. And as he steps up and takes command over his own fate you believe in his growth.

A good movie - but the intensity of violence AND emotions took the fun out of it.

I saw this movie with 4 boys ages 8-12. They seemed to like it. While overall I felt it was quite good, and Jaden Smith has a long career ahead of him, it was rather dark and excessively violent. Of course I knew there would be fighting, but the level of intensity was too much. Even the boys I watched it with recognized that fighting at that level of intensity would have landed someone in the hospital. Also, the overall mood was depressing. The Jackie Chan character was so sad. I love Jackie Chan's movies but this was too grim. Could have lighter - and shorter! Even the fledgling romance did not help lighten the mood. All very heavy. A bit much all around. I'd say not for younger than at least 9.

Excessive prolonged violence, gives China a very bad image

I hated the movie. I felt very uncomfortable seeing young kids ~12 so evil, mean and merciless. I kept looking at my watch. The movie is 2h20m and after 1 hour, Dre (Smith) has not even been taken as student by Jackie Chan. I actually wanted to leave the theater. (I've made my kids sit through War of the Worlds and Date Night - shame on me but I think those are less offensive than this movie). I found portraying Chinese people the way they did to be offensive. This day and age, having a Martial Arts Instructor right in Beijing be so evil as to tell his students to injure/cheat an opponent and break his leg?!! Totally unbelievable. I would ban this movie in China. None of the kids in the movie have any innocence. Jayden Smith was very cute but acted like an adult (acted a lot like Will Smith, actually). Other than the first white boy that welcomed Dre, there were no other good boys in the movie. I wish they included the white boy more during the course of the movie. The girl Dre liked had no innocence for a 12-year old Chinese girl - way too flirtatious. And are there no decent parents in this movie? Even Dre's mother does not seem very responsible or concern about her son's long term welfare. How about the bad kids' parents? Don't anyone teach morality and ethics other than Mr Han (Jackie Chan)?I miss Jackie Chan's usually happy demeanor. He was serious (ok) sad and depressed.I admire the main character wanting to conquer his fear. But it was a very short-sighted view.

Be prepared for martial arts violence

My 12-year-old son has his conditional black belt in Okinawan karate, and is a competition fighter. Except for the fact that he wears protective gear for sparring, and the kung fu in the film is bare-knuckle, we are accustomed to a high level of martial arts aggression. Families who are not used to this might want to discuss it ahead of time with the kids, to get a handle on how troubling it will be to them. If Jaden lives up to his performance here, he has quite a career ahead of him. Jackie is always terrific to watch, and his performance here had depth and poignancy. We really enjoyed the movie.

Jackie Chan in a more serious role

The bullying is part of the story, but even grownups around me were flinching. Jackie Chan is an excellent role model and martial arts teacher, and anyone interested in seeing good martial arts on display would like this movie. The plot is mostly the same as the original, but the characters and setting are so different, this ends up being a completely different movie. Well worth seeing, as long as you're old enough.

A movie not for children

I was excited about taking my kids to the movie but didn't like the fact that the kid use the 'A' word 2-3 times in the movie. We teach our kids not to use bad language but as a child who sees another kid the KARATE KID using bad language--they think it's cool. There really was not a need for bad language in the movie it would have been just as effective without bad language. Producers MUST know that this is believed to be a kiddie movie--but it's too grown up for kids under the age of 13+. When will producers/parents stand-up and be an example for our kids. I wander how Jaden's parents can tell him not to use the 'A' word on a daily basis but it's ok for the movie because it's acting--where do you draw the line? Why compromise? Lastly the movie was pretty violet. I'm 43 years old and didn't want to see some scenes because the punches/kicks were pretty harsh.
